About Galveston County Property Taxes
Galveston County is located along the Texas Gulf Coast and is home to over 350,000 residents. The median home value is approximately $322,000, and at an effective tax rate of about 1.54%, the typical homeowner pays roughly $4,960 per year in property taxes.
The Galveston Central Appraisal District (GCAD) appraises all property in the county annually. In 2024, nearly 62,000 property tax protests were filed - 30% of all parcels - and 66% of those protests resulted in a reduced value. While the informal success rate is lower than some neighboring counties, 65% of cases that reach the ARB also result in reductions.
Galveston County features a diverse mix of coastal and mainland communities. The historic island city of Galveston draws tourism and has unique valuation challenges related to flood risk and storm damage. On the mainland, League City and Friendswood in the Clear Lake area near NASA's Johnson Space Center have seen strong growth, while Texas City, Dickinson, and Santa Fe offer more affordable options. Property values have been essentially flat year-over-year (+0.1%), but the appraisal district may still be catching up to prior years' increases.
Whether you own a beach house on Galveston Island, a home in the master-planned communities of League City, or property in the Clear Lake area, protesting your GCAD assessment can help ensure you're paying taxes on an accurate valuation.
