About Travis County Property Taxes
Travis County is home to Austin, the capital of Texas and one of the fastest-growing cities in the nation. With over 1.3 million residents, the median home value in Travis County is approximately $520,000, and homeowners face an effective tax rate of about 1.65% - putting the typical annual tax bill near $8,580.
The Travis Central Appraisal District (TCAD) is responsible for appraising all property in the county. In 2024, nearly 187,000 property tax protests were filed - a remarkable 39% of all parcels, the highest protest rate of any major Texas county. Of those protests, 87% resulted in a reduced value. When cases reach the ARB, the success rate climbs to 89%.
Austin's real estate market experienced one of the sharpest corrections in Texas, with values declining 3.4% year-over-year in recent data. However, TCAD assessed values haven't always kept pace with the downturn, meaning many homeowners are still paying taxes on inflated numbers from the pandemic-era surge.
Whether your home is in the established central Austin neighborhoods of Travis Heights and Tarrytown, the lakeside communities of Lakeway and Bee Cave, or the rapidly growing suburbs of Pflugerville and Manor, protesting your TCAD assessment is essential. With 4 out of 10 Travis County property owners already protesting, the question isn't whether it's worth it - it's whether you can afford not to.
